Time Cycles was commissioned in 1998 by Jim Self, Los Angeles tubist, and utilizes jazz lines and rhythms in its conception.  The piece explores the extreme range of the instrument and it’s not often heard lyrical quality and the accompaniment uses a sound design palate in addition to orchestral sounds sometimes manipulated or processed to create its texture. I like to focus on an “electronic “orchestra instead of non-pitched pure electronic sound design. Keeping time or a rhythmic pulse is paramount in driving the piece forward. The work has been recorded by Jim Self in Los Angeles and Sergio Carolino in Portugal and performed by many tuba players around the world.
